We dressed in black and white attire for the themed cocktail party at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Attendees enjoyed scrumptious gourmet tapas, a FABulous dessert table, live entertainment from Dillard High School Jazz Ensemble and Drama Group and a private curated tour of the contemporary multicultural “Belief + Doubt” collection led by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator of the museum.

We met at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood at 2:45. Tickets were available on first come basis to FAB members and 1 guest.  Cost $150 includes transportation, refreshments, Art Basel admission and a private 1 hour group tour of the main fair.  Added bonus: Curated tour of the Center’s exhibition at 2:15.

Featuring guest speaker Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy at Americans for the Arts.  “Emerging Trends in the Arts: How to engage and broaden your audience”.  New this year, our luncheon was held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom.  Open to the public.  Cost: $50 if pre-paid for FAB members.  $55 for non-FAB members.

We celebrated the start of our 14th season at a beautiful, waterfront home with art collection in east Fort Lauderdale, cocktails and hor d’oeuvres as we mingled with special guest, Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy at Americans for the Arts.  This was a FABulous evening, generously hosted by  Michelle Howland and Donald Sussman, exclusively for FAB members and their guests.

October 19, 2015, Tower Club: ART BASEL’s Stefanie Block Reed spotlights the latest developments in the visual arts at ART BASEL Miami 2015.  Since 1970, Art Basel’s goal has been to connect the world’s preeminent galleries and their patrons, serving as a meeting point for the international art world. Now, over forty years later, its three fairs – in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami Beach – rank as the top shows of their kind. Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach returned December 2015 for its 14th edition with leading international galleries, drawn from countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

January 11, 2016, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Arts Vision 2016: “Building a Healthier Broward County Through the Arts”.  Cutting edge trends in arts organizations, how the arts improve education, our economy and even healthcare, presented by the nationally known speaker Randy Cohen of Americans for the Arts.  Randy spoke about building communities through the arts.  Immediately following lunch, Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale gave a private tour of “The Indestructible Lee Miller” exhibition.

March 14, 2016, Tower Club: “What is FATVillage?”  Art students from FAT Village Center for the Arts, along with Executive Director Anthony Lauro, showcase their many artistic programs; presentation on Flagler Arts and Technology Village (FATVillage), Fort Lauderdale’s ever growing Arts community located downtown in Flagler Village.  Home to local artists and creative businesses, FATVillage aims to connect our city to an emerging culture of grass roots inspired imaginative artists, musicians, painters, sculptors, photographers, urban land planners, designers, young professionals and, of course, the occasional hipster.

FAB! Fun Events:

  November 12 2015, Private Art Tour.  Private Art Tour, Contemporary Glass and Decorative Arts Collection.  From Chihuly to William Morris and beyond.  Visit by bus to privately curated glass art collection.  This magnificent penthouse gallery is a very historic collection of museum quality glass that represents the entire history of the medium as well as fabulous pieces in many other categories.  Guided by a curator on an absolutely amazing tour.
  December 4, 2015, Guided Tour of Art Basel Miami Beach 2015Friends and fellow FAB! members journeyed to Miami Beach via luxury coach bus, and enjoyed a day planned especially for them –  a luxury bus ride, a boxed lunch on the bus, admission, and a private tour by ArtNexus guides of the amazing Art Basel, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with time to explore the world famous exhibition.

Fun event featuring a private art collection tour at the member’s home, who will share with us her extensive contemporary art collection with wonderful works by Jim Dine, Rick Beck, Ormond Gigli, Lorenzo Quinn and many others.  Tour followed by lunch at Vienna Café.
    2016-03-08 Kinky Boots Photo  March 9, 2016, Broadway’s “Kinky Boots” Matinee at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  Backstage tour and luncheon in the Center’s private donor lounge, the Josephine S. Leiser Room.  Lunch followed by the matinee performance of “Kinky Boots”, Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit!

Florida Youth Orchestra

Florida Youth Orchestra

November 11, 2014, Entertained with a musical performance by members of the Florida Youth Orchestra, a FAB! Grantee.  Since 1988, over 20,000 children have been educated and inspired by their participation in the Florida Youth Orchestra.  FYO is honored to have had FAB! support for our most popular performance: the annual Spotlight Concert, which features selected young soloists.  This funding makes it possible to use the Coral Springs Center for the Arts as the venue, and to sell out the theater each year!

Dave Muller: Rock 'n' Old, on view at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood until January 18, 2015. FAB! members and their guests can still see the final FAB! Knight New Work Award presentation, Rock 'n' Old, Dave Muller's wall murals that wrap around the gallery. Large-scale paintings, three-dimensional works, and six listening stations merge into a multi-sensory installation created on site by the artist based on the rise of rock 'n' roll as a musical genre.

January 12, 2015, Celebrating the successful completion of the FAB! Knight New Work Awards. For the past three years, the FAB! Knight New Work awards challenged Broward County arts and culture organizations to propose projects that would break new ground for their organizations and that would also create more avenues of arts and culture for new audiences. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation readily gave its support, and matching funds were donated from generous corporations, foundations and individuals in the community. A total of $300,000 was invested over the three years.

April 20, 2015, Voting Luncheon at the Tower Club. FAB! Grantee – The Gold Coast Jazz Society – presented Nicole Yarling and Mark Marineau in a lively presentation featuring the female songwriters that contributed to the Great American Songbook. The Gold Coast Jazz Society, a non-profit organization, was organized in 1992 by founder, Frederick Ruffner, Jr. and a group of avid jazz buffs to perpetuate and advance jazz through performances, education and outreach activities. In addition to an annual jazz concert series held at the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the Gold Coast Jazz Society provides the JazzSLAM program, a free in-school jazz education presentation for elementary school students, a series of jazz lectures for life-long learners, the First Friday Jazz Jams, which is a series of free jam sessions for student jazz musicians that is open to the public, the annual Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Program which provides music scholarships for college and summer music camps, free jazz outreach performances for the community and musical services provided by the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band.

Celebrate FAB!’s 10th Anniversary season with talented students from Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre performing favorite musical theatre selections.Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre has been teaching the art of life through the magic of theatre since 1952. Students learn and grow through classes, productions and community outreach programs. Be amazed and inspired by the future performers and supporters of live theatre as young actors sing their way into your hearts.
  January 13, 2014, Program Luncheon at Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.  FAB! members and their guests were invited to view “Touring the Spirit of COBRA”, a new exhibition incorporating works from the COBRA Museum of Modern Art in the Netherlands.  Following an elegant lunch, Bonnie Clearwater, new Museum Director and Chief Curator, offered a behind the scenes look at all the current exhibits.

October 22, 2012, Sean’s Dance Factory.  Sean’s Dance Factory was founded with the intent that all children deserve a bright future. Saw how Sean works to manifest this objective through Hip-Hop dancing.
December 3, 2012, Art Basel Miami Beach Through the Eyes of Experts. Lively panel discussion on collecting and appreciating art from various perspectives within the professional art community. Panelists included a curator, a collector, a gallery owner and an art consultant.

2011-2012 the Funding Arts Broward programs:
theme was “The Art of Making Art” as they explored the process of artistic creation.

November 14, 2011, Choosing Wisely.  Experienced first hand how an actor and director work together to create theater magic. Observed Genie Croft, Artistic Director at Women’s Theatre Project, a FAB! grantee, breathe life into a scene through interaction with her actors. Saw how the final acting product is the result of numerous layered decisions.
January 9, 2012, Choice Interpretation.  Observed the results achieved by different artists using the same inspiration and source material. Have you ever looked at a work of art and wondered what the artist was thinking or feeling as it came to be?
March 5, 2012, Making Music.  Luncheon guests participated with a composer and lyricist in the creation of an original song.
April 16, 2012, Voting Luncheon hosted by NSU.  Members only meeting at Nova’s Don Taft University Center. … making a difference in the arts in Broward County!
May 14, 2012, Annual Meeting & Grant Awards Presentation.  Celebrated the new 2013 FAB! grantees with members, guests and FAB! funding partners at the Tower Club.

FAB! Fun Events:

October 11, 2011, FAB! Season Kick Off.  “An Enchanted Evening of Music” Cocktail reception and musical performance hosted by corporate member Northern Trust at their Las Olas location.

December 3, 2011, Art Basel and Museum Wine Reception.  Miami Beach, Florida, hosted the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa took part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

December 14, 2011, Art Tour and Scotch Tasting.  FAB! members kicked off the Holiday Season with friends, fabulous art and flavorful scotch. Toured the FAB!-funded exhibition Re-Framing the Feminine at  Girls’ Club and enjoyed a scotch tasting donated by Jim Calaverne from Shaw-Ross International Importers.

January 12, 2012, Art Tour of the collection of Leland Hirsch.  Caribbean fare at Bimini Boat Yard followed by dessert a tour of the private art collection at the home of Leland & Lise Hirsch.

February 29, 2012, Trey McIntyre Project at the MOAFL.  Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale performance by the Trey McIntyre Project, a contemporary ballet company founded in 2004 to nurture, support and produce work by one of the world’s most vibrant choreographers, Trey McIntyre.  Dance performance and lecture followed by wine and cheese.

March 30, 2012, Tour of New World Symphony building and Open Rehearsal.  A day in Miami to experience the newly designed New World Symphony building designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry followed by a rehearsal of A Nordic Odyssey and lunch at Prelude.

April 18, 2012, Stage Tour and Performance of South Pacific.  Enjoy South Pacific at the Broward Center with a back stage tour, lunch in the private Josephine S. Leiser room and a matinee.

Preview of Miami Art Week November 15, 2010, Preview of Art Week Miami.  Sandi-Jo Gordon, vice-chair of Miami-Dade Art in Public Places art collector previewed the upcoming fairs, directing attention to each one’s special attractions, and identify trends.
January 10, 2011, presentation by Symphony of the Americas.  Featuring internationally acclaimed violinist, Laszlo Pap, joined by violinist Claudia Cagnassone and accompanied by pianist Daphne Spottiswoode!
March 7, 2011, presentation by Fantasy Theatre Factory.  With a special preview of three magical shows presented by Fantasy Theatre Factory creators!
April 11, 2011, Voting Luncheon hosted by NSU.  Members only meeting to vote on 2012 Grant Applications at Nova’s Don Taft University Center. …making a difference in the arts in Broward County.
