Scenario I
March 30, 2011

Click here for the original article

Broward’s diverse array of art groups will unite through an inaugural celebration during The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale’s “Spring for the Arts” from April 2 through April 30. Spearheaded by The Galleria, this month-long program will provide a platform for local arts groups to promote their organizations and will raise funds for Funding Arts Broward, which provides grants to further the arts in the community.

In support of Funding Arts Broward, Truluck’s Fort Lauderdale recently hosted a reception for the kick-off, where guests recognized Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman, Kelley Shanley, Joy Satterlee, Janet Erlick and Doug McCraw for their commitment to the arts in the community.

“Spring for the Arts” will commence on April 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Galleria with a one-day expo of 32 local arts organizations, which will educate mall visitors about their mission and upcoming events. Attendees will also enjoy viewing auditions for Tri-Rail’s Senior Idol with more than 90 singers ages 65 and over, a theatrical performance by the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre, a dance performance by the Jubilee Dance Theatre, and the launch of a month-long art exhibition, “Look Who’s Living in the Trees,” from Young at Art Children’s Museum. Other participating groups include: Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Broward Cultural Division, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Master Chorale of South Florida, Miramar Cultural Center, National Week of the Ocean, Next Weekend Productions and South Florida Symphony.

“The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale will provide the perfect backdrop for this first-time community effort in support of the arts,” said Melissa Milroy, marketing manager of The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. “With decreased funding for the arts, this is the perfect opportunity to connect arts groups with the public, while raising funds that will provide more arts programming for all to enjoy.”

In addition, “Spring for the Arts” will include free performances and art exhibitions throughout April. Sponsors include: AutoNation, Piano Music Center, Bitner Goodman and Truluck’s Fort Lauderdale. Participating groups include: Ann Storck Center, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, ArtServe, ArtsUnited, Broward Dance Academy, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Florida Grand Opera, Florida Youth Orchestra, Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, Fort Lauderdale Women’s Chorus, Gold Coast Watercolor Society, Joi Street Dance, Le P’ti Club, Life is Art, Nest of Living Arts, Nova Singers, Palms Center for the Arts, Symphony of the Americas, The Florida Special Arts Center and The Girl Choir of South Florida.

“We applaud The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale for presenting this opportunity to showcase our thriving arts scene,” said Drazia Rubenstein, president of Funding Arts Broward. “Funds raised will be distributed through grants that will directly support arts programming for everyone to enjoy.”

Also, in support of Funding Arts Broward, raffle tickets for the chance to win a 1.25-carat diamond will be available during April at The Galleria’s Guest Services. Only 200 tickets will be sold at $50 each.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information call 954-564-1036 or visit http://www.galleriamall-fl.com. •

Funding Arts Broward! (FAB!) was recently the recipient of a $150,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. With this grant, FAB will establish the “Knight New Work Awards” which they believe will be a catalyst for Broward County cultural presenters to innovate, to invest in the professional development of their creative personnel, to purchase necessary equipment, collaborate with guest artists, and more.

Knight New Work Awardees will be selected by a panel of arts professionals assembled by FAB!. Along with the honor, awardees will have their art displayed on an annual artist-designed poster that will be produced by FAB! and displayed throughout the county to create awareness of their works. Creative marketing and free master classes or artistic demonstrations by awardees will also cultivate new audiences in underserved communities.

It is expected by FAB! that the establishment of these New Work Awards will prove to be a game-changing event for the cultural life of Broward County. Their existence will draw new talent to the Broward community and reward existing talent.

This year the Knight Foundation awarded $3.8 million in grants in South Florida as part of the Knight Arts Challenge but only three in Broward; the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood ($25,000), FAB! ($150,000) and William Stewart’s Rhythm of Africa Music Program ($25,000). FAB!’s grant was among the largest for this program. This is a testament to the work that the leadership of FAB! has done in the community.

Since 2003, FAB! has awarded more than $1 million to more than 30 arts organizations in Broward County. FAB! was formed in response to significant decreases in government arts funding. FAB!’s mission is to enrich the Broward County arts community by funding high quality Broward County based visual and performing arts programming. For more information visit http://www.fundingartsbroward.org.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation advances journalism in the digital age and invests in the vitality of communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. The Knight Foundation focuses on projects that promote community engagement and lead to transformational change. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge is a five-year, $40 million initiative to bring South Florida together through the arts.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel
September 25, 2010|By Dara Levan and Jarett Levan

As the current economic climate continues to take its toll on South Florida’s art and cultural organizations and venues, it’s more important than ever that residents rally to support these local treasures. The positive impact of the arts on our economy, our communities and our youth is tremendous.

From an economic standpoint, the arts are a major attraction for both South Florida residents and visitors and are an important source of employment and tax revenue for our communities.

Broward County, for example, has more than 5,000 arts-related businesses that employ almost 22,000 people. Patrons of the arts buy tickets to our museums, theaters and galleries, dine in our restaurants, sleep in our hotels, and shop in our malls. Cultural and artistic venues also add to the diversity of attractions that we can offer visitors and help make us an attractive vacation destination.

In Broward County, non-profit arts organizations generate over $150 million in total economic activity annually, with almost $90 million benefiting local restaurants, hotels, retailers, parking garages, and countless other businesses. There is also a significant increase in spending from “cultural tourists,” compared to tourists who don’t attend an arts event.

A thriving arts and cultural scene also contributes to a better quality of life in our communities, attracts new residents, and brings more businesses to the area, all of which strengthen the local economy.

As parents, we also understand the equally significant impact that the arts have on the positive social, emotional and cognitive development of children. Cutting funding for cultural and arts education is clearly detrimental to future generations. But as more and more school boards across Florida, and the country, face pressure to cut budgets, the need to maintain area art and cultural venues becomes even more pressing as they may soon be the only places where our youth can participate in the visual and performing arts.

As South Florida residents, we each share the burden of ensuring the survival of our beloved cultural institutions for our children, our communities and our local economy. We must do our part to support the arts where we live, work and raise our families. Here are some ways that each of us can make a positive difference:

Volunteer to serve on an arts organization board or usher for local performances.

Support your favorite arts organization by becoming a member or subscriber, sponsoring an event or making a charitable donation.

Buy local art for gifts to friends and family.

Purchase tickets to area performances and give them as gifts.

Encourage your workplace to sponsor an arts organization or event.

Work to elect leaders who support arts and culture and understand the importance of creating a vibrant community.

Write an editorial about the value of arts education to your community.

Understandably, difficult decisions are being made by our County Commissioners about where to invest and where to cut. But when arts funding is reduced, it undermines an industry that is a cornerstone of economic, communal and childhood development. Your support for the arts is a sound investment — an investment that will provide significant returns in the form of stabilized and revitalized communities, a better quality of life, and an educational system that engages our children and prepares them for the future.
