SUMMARY:FAB Grantee Program: NSU Art Museum Presents: Defining Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale presents Defining Landscapes\, an exhibition of works from the permanent collection\, mounted in celebration of the newly restored Huizenga Park\, located across the street from the Museum on East Las Olas Boulevard. \nDepictions of the natural world have been a constant throughout the history of images\, but it was during the 16th century Northern Renaissance that the word landscape (derived from the Dutch landschap) came to be recognized as a subject worthy of art. In the 17th century\, French painters such as Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain brought a sublime grandeur to the subject\, endowing it with rich symbolism. In their epic scenes\, forests\, mountains\, clouds\, and thunder boldly represented the ebbs and flows of human progress. The early modern painters who followed pushed further\, outside the studio and into nature itself\, working en plein air\, sketching and painting outside\, immersed in their subject\, capturing the essence of nature through immediate observation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe works on view in this exhibition represent the ways artists\, in the wake of this history\, have perceived nature. In a world in which reality is increasingly filtered through modes of detachment\, the landscape comes to represent vitality with heightened significance. Through this exhibition\, we may come to acknowledge the changing definition of landscape in our post-industrial present\, question how we each relate to the outside world\, and consider the ways in which authentic experience can still be found in nature. \nWhere:\nNSU Art Museum\nOne East Las Olas Boulevard\nFort Lauderdale\, FL 33301\nWhen:\nTuesday\, May 5\, 2026 through Sunday\, July 26\, 2026\nCost:\n$5 – $16\nTickets:\nPrices vary. SUMMARY:FAB Grantee Program: Dance Now! Presents: Program III Featuring "Love-Less: Dance of the Last Moho Braccatus
DESCRIPTION:Dance NOW! Miami Presents Program III\, featuring “Love-less: Dance of the last Moho braccatus\,” a world premiere from Co-Artistic Director Hannah Baumgarten. This contemporary ballet is based on the story of the small black-and-yellow Hawaiian songbird\, facing extinction due to habitat destruction and climate change. “Love-less” is a contemporary dance depicting a real story of paradise lost\, of true love\, extinction and ultimately of the frailty of our world\, with an original score based on the bird’s calls by Italian composer Federico Bonacossa\, with costumes from the Morales Sisters\, a stunning set high atop the trees from Bruce F. Brown and stirring video art by Co-Director Diego Salterini. \nOrnithologists followed the plight of this endangered species as it careened toward extinction–but were hopeful as a pair of the birds resisted; therein remained a chance that the species would continue. The distinctive mating song of the last pair of these birds was recorded\, with its call and response. In a tragic turn of events\, a hurricane killed the female of the pair\, the male unaware of her fate. The distinctive bell-like call was last heard and recorded in 1987 as the male partner called out for his mate\, unable to understand why she did not respond. \nThe evening will also include audience favorites from the 26th season of dance. \nThis program is sponsored in part by the Broward County Cultural Division\, Funding Arts Broward\, Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs\, and other donors. \nFAB Members use code MOHO25 to receive 25% off on tier 1-3 tickets. While supplies last. \nWhere:\nLauderhill Performing Arts Center\n3800 NW 11th Place\nLauderhill\, FL 33311\nWhen:\nFriday\, May 8th at 8:00pm\nCost:\n$20-$50\nTickets:\nTicket prices vary. SUMMARY:FAB Grantee Program: Master Chorale of South Florida Presents: Heaven & Earth
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in a multi-media experience that highlights the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Sarah Kirkland Snider wrote Mass for the Endangered as a prayer for disappearing species of animals and the imperiled environments in which they live. Called “powerful\, delicate and as exquisite as a spider’s web\,” the work motivates listeners to save what’s left. The Chorale will also perform the world premiere of a piece commissioned from Marques Garrett. The Sky Remembers provides a fresh musical perspective on the unique flora and fauna of South Florida. More than a concert\, Heaven & Earth is an unforgettable journey that blends art\, nature and music. \nWhere:\nAll Saints Episcopal Church\n333 Tarpon Drive\nFort Lauderdale\, FL 33301\nWhen:\nFriday\, May 15\, 2026 at 8:00pm\nCost:\n$40-$60\nTickets:\nTicket prices vary. SUMMARY:FAB Member Event: NSU Art Museum Presents: Surrounded Islands
DESCRIPTION:NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has been designated the permanent home of Surrounded Islands\, the iconic 1983 environmental artwork by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Beginning in February 2025\, the museum will present a major exhibition featuring more than 43 preparatory drawings and collages\, along with photographs\, engineering plans\, permits\, original materials (including sections of the signature pink fabric)\, and archival documents that reveal the full creative process behind the project. \nThis significant gift from the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation positions the museum among leading global institutions that house major works by the artists\, reinforcing Fort Lauderdale’s status as an international arts destination. The installation itself—11 islands in Biscayne Bay encircled by 6.5 million square feet of pink floating fabric—lasted just two weeks in May 1983 but required years of planning\, environmental coordination\, and private funding by the artists. \nNow preserved through this comprehensive archive\, Surrounded Islands continues to inspire new generations\, offering insight into the artists’ groundbreaking approach to large-scale\, temporary public art and its lasting cultural impact on South Florida and beyond. \nFollowing the tour\, guests are invited to enjoy lunch at the Museum Café (optional\, not included)\, offering a selection of sandwiches\, salads\, and refreshments in a relaxed setting. CLICK HERE for a preview of the Museum Café menu. \nWhere:\nNSU Art Museum\nOne East Las Olas Boulevard\nFort Lauderdale\, FL 33301\nWhen:\nTuesday\, May 19\, 2026 at 11:30 am\nCost: \nFREE Member Event\nTickets:\nCLICK HERE to register or email Info@FundingArtsBroward.org for more registration information.
