FUNDING ARTS BROWARD (FAB!) AWARDS $200,000 TO BROWARD COUNTY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
2017 funding marks over $2 million distributed in grants to date
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), a non-profit arts organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, Florida, announced the recipients of its 2017 grant funding during a celebratory reception hosted by Northern Trust. As many as 26 recipient organizations were awarded with grants ranging from $5,000 – $12,500, totaling $200,000.
“FAB! is proud to support deserving organizations which present impactful visual and performing arts programs in Broward County,” said Elaine Blattner, president of FAB!. “We thank our loyal supporters who make these grants possible and share in FAB!’s belief that art and culture bring the community together and positively impact our quality of life.”
The grant awards presentation was enjoyed by more than 100 special guests. Special thanks to City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, Casandra Ortiz, Fantasy Theatre Factory and Florida Youth Orchestra for their participation during the event.
FAB!’s 2017 grants were awarded to organizations such as Broward Performing Arts Foundation, Fantasy Theatre Factory, Florida Grand Opera, Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Seraphic Fire, Symphony of the Americas and Young At Art of Broward.* This grant cycle contributed to FAB!’s total monetary distribution over the past few years which now exceeds $2 million.
Each grant represented a unique upcoming program. For example, ArtServe, received a grant for its ARTrepreneurs Short Play Festival, which will showcase the creative work of teens interested in pursuing careers in the arts. The teens are mentored by seasoned professionals and guided through the staging, casting, marketing and production process to prepare for the festival. Funding Arts Broward awarded FATVillage Arts District with funds for THE NERVE: Performance Art Festival a three-day collection of performances featuring as many as 60 artists. Seraphic Fire was granted the maximum award amount of $12,500 for its concert series of choral and/or orchestral works in Broward County January – May 2017, as well as a special program celebrating Seraphic Fire’s 15th Anniversary.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Funding Arts Broward (FAB!) recently elected a new team of officers to begin the 2015-2016 arts funding year. The new leaders are Elaine Blattner, FAB! President; Jayne Mills, FAB! Vice President; Carolyn Lee, FAB! Secretary; and Cindy Kashdin, FAB! Treasurer.
Building on the past 12 years of success and entrepreneurship, Funding Arts Broward aims to continue into another decade of strong support for the arts, through the business community and dedicated residents, who believe the arts to be a vital source for quality of life.
FAB! also welcomes three new members to the board, Linda Carter, Ruth Anderson Coggeshall, and Wendy Boucher. They join board members Bonnie Eletz, Susan Lochrie, Tara McGinn, Michelle Sorrentino, as well as Jessica Olefson, Drazia Rubenstein and Les Weil. “We are ready to strengthen Funding Arts Broward’s mission in South Florida,” said Elaine Blattner, FAB! President. Since 2003, FAB! has awarded more than two million dollars to 30 plus area organizations, and we hope to increase this number, grow the number of members who make these contributions and keep the arts strong and vibrant in Broward County. FAB! is proud to make a difference for area residents of diverse ages, interests and cultures.”
Blattner, currently serves as Director of Development at Nova Southeastern University. She has been with the university for more than 15 years. Previously, she was the Interim President and Executive Vice President at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and currently sits as a member of the Governor’s Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance; and recently completed her term of service as a member of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee. Her past work with FAB! includes serving as Chair, Nominating Committee; Captain, and serving as a member of several Grant Screening Teams. She resides with her husband, David, in Cooper City, FL.
Founding member Jayne Mills, FAB!s Vice President has been a Corporate (Morgan Stanley) member since 2013, and has served on the board for the past six years, as well as contributed as Communications Chair for the past four. As Vice President and Portfolio Manager with Morgan Stanley since 2009, and Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch for 24 years prior, Mills brings financial knowledge and expertise to her new role as Vice President. She is a Certified Investment Management Analyst, a Certified Financial Manager, a registered Yoga Teacher, specializing in prenatal yoga, with a BS in Finance from Florida Atlantic University. Originally from Chicago, Mills has three children and has lived in Fort Lauderdale since 1981.
Carolyn Lee, FAB! Board Secretary has been a corporate member of FAB, representing Northern Trust, since 2009. Recently retiring, she plans to continue her membership and involvement as Secretary of the Board. Past involvement includes Membership Task Force Chair and participation on several Grant Screening Teams. Carolyn is a CFP® professional and along with FAB!, plans to continue her relationship with The Humane Society of Broward County and Henderson Behavioral Health. She and her husband Wayne, a local physician, reside in Coral Ridge.
Cindy Kashdin, FAB! Treasurer graduated from Florida Atlantic University. She volunteers with Women in Distress and SOS Children’s Village for numerous years and she has been FAB! Treasurer for the past eight. Kashdin is married and has raised four children in Broward County.
FAB!’s mission is to enrich Broward County’s arts community by funding high quality, Broward-based visual and performing arts programming. The board brings a solid mixture of experience and passion, along with a membership of like-minded individuals with a passion for the arts, and a passion for Broward County.

Funding Arts Broward Awards 25 Grants to Arts/Cultural Projects
$195,300 Granted to Local Organizations
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Funding Arts Broward (FAB!) recently announced 25 grants which it will be awarding in 2015 to a diverse representation of arts and cultural organizations in the county. The awards, totaling $195,300, were presented at FAB!’s annual event at the Tower Club.
“We are proud to be able to make this ongoing monetary commitment to help maintain a wide variety of arts in Broward County,” said Elaine Blattner, recently elected FAB! President. Since 2003, FAB! has awarded more than two million dollars to more than 30 area arts organizations
“Our mission is to enrich Broward County’s arts community by funding high quality, Broward-based visual and performing art programming,” she explained.
“Since all of our activities are coordinated by volunteers who share a common belief that art and culture transcend individual differences in our society, they make an annual donation which helps support our common goals.”

Jazz Artist and Educator Nicole Yarling Loves Funding Arts Broward
“Your work supports children and music; those are my two passions,” says Yarling
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Gold Coast Jazz’s Nicole Yarling took center stage recently at a Voting Luncheon for Funding Arts Broward (FAB!)members at Fort Lauderdale’s Tower Club.
Opening her remarks and performance with the words, “I love you all,” Yarling followed up with why. Speaking about the work that FAB! does, among other things, to provide grants that support music programs in schools for children, she said, “I love music and I love children, and your work helps me to work in those two passions.” The luncheon marked the culmination of the grant review and voting process.
During the program FAB! announced that 26 applicants were recommended to receive a total of $195,300in grant awards for programs in the 2016 Season. The grants will be awarded at a luncheon on May 18th.
As a vocalist and violinist, Yarling has worked throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico since moving to Florida from her native Brooklyn in 1980. She’s fronted the R&B act Little Nicky & the Slicks, blues band The Weld, and her current, self-titled Nicole Yarling 4-Tet, and toured and recorded with international artists ranging from traditional jazz (multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan) to fusion (guitarist Randy Bernsen) to pop (singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett).
In celebration of the process that FAB!, now in its 12th year, takes with receiving and selecting applicants for grant awards, Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor and FAB! Vice President Jayne Mills spoke about FAB! success. Looking ahead to the next ten years, Mills spoke about Task Forces that recently examined membership, programs, giving and visibility initiatives, geared at enhancing the impact of the organization. “These Task Forces,” said Mills, “are aimed at assessing what we already do well, and identifying areas that need attention.”
Through surveys from FAB! members as well as input from community volunteers, they found themselves overwhelmed with the responses, both in quality and quantity.
Grant Chair Diane Hardy spoke about the mechanics of the FAB! voting process, in which 29 grant applications were received this year. Each proposal was carefully reviewed by the Grants Screening Committee and then those selected, interviewed and thoroughly vetted each upon its merits.
FAB!’s ability this year to recommend three new organizations enhanced an already impressive list of grantees. The organization conducts an online voting platform in which all FAB! members participate. Through this efficient and effective process for determining grant eligibility and funding, FAB! has created a community of like-minded, art loving individuals who have joined together as advocates of visual and performing arts.
Gold Coast Jazz’s (GCJ) Executive Director Pam Dearden opened the program and introduced Yarling’s and pianist Mark Marineau’s lyrical, musical and educational performance, as members of GCJ. They took the audience through a lyrical, entertaining and educational history of the unsung heroes of the music industry, spotlighting women who played large roles in music from the Great American Songbook, many of whom are not known. Heroes she said such as Dorothy Fields, secretary to Irving Berlin, who transcribed all his music, necessary for others to use because in his genius, he only played the black keys on the piano. Yarling is also an educator, composer, recording artist and author. For an energizing and educational lunch time event, this one had it all!
With this year’s awards, Funding Arts Broward will have distributed more than $2.5 million to the arts in Broward County. FAB! continues to strive towards attracting new and diverse members, excellence in creativity for Broward County arts and culture and networking towards building strength and passion for the arts, in the name of community development and growth of spirit.
Says FAB President Drazia Rubenstein, “We are committed to supporting Broward County, and the artistic talent and audience that we are nurturing for the next ten years.” The program is created through a sustainable funding pool supported by annual contributions by members – individuals ($1000) and corporate ($3,500), is managed through an accurate and transparent accounting system. Every cent of the membership fee is distributed to the arts through grants. Members feel that this money has a direct economic impact, as well as an impact on the quality of life, community value and arts education; and that it is an endeavor rich with reward, for the future, for the fabric of the community and for the children, through arts education.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In January Funding Arts Broward members joined three well-known artists for a celebratory New Year’s luncheon. In the dramatic exhibition event space at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, the photographs of three groundbreaking painters, Francis Picabia, Julian Schnabel & J.F. Willumsen, connected in the Museum’s latest visual art show Café Dolly, silently hostedthe room full of FAB! members.
Throughout the lunch, a number of speakers highlighted the phenomenal success of a Funding Arts Broward and Knight Foundation three-year partnership -the FAB!/Knight New Work Awards. Grant Administrator Michelle Weinberg shared that “one of the objectives of this project was to enhance the status of Broward County as a supportive community among other creatives nationally. As the word gets out,” she cited, “and artists and performers from other states see what’s going on in Broward, they will definitely take notice.”
Knight Foundation Tatiana Hernandez attended the luncheon in representation. The FAB!/Knight New Work Awardswas launched with a $150,000 challenge grant from the Knight Foundation and was matched in dollars and passion by FAB! and outside supporters, creating a total fund of $300,000. These funds were redistributed to eight enterprising arts and cultural projects that would not have existed otherwise.
Executive Director, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Joy Satterlee spoke about their groundbreaking exhibition. “Dave Mueller’s Rock ‘n’ Old drew crowds in the high numbers,” Satterlee said, “and became a pioneering exhibition for the Center and for the City of Hollywood.” Judith Carney, Director of Development at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts rose to speak about the Trey McIntyre Project produced in 2013, and described the series of master classes and workshops that guided more than 100 youths through the rigors of artistic creation and self-expression.
NSU’s Museum of Art Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater shared details about the Museum’s New Work Award project Research and Development: Concerning Belonging. Five South Florida artists created artworks addressing homelessness and led creative workshops with Fort Lauderdale’s homeless community in collaboration with the Broward Partnership, which operates the Central Homeless Assistance Shelter.
Funding Arts Broward is more than just fun, and more than just funding. Funding Arts Broward Supports Rock ‘n’ Old Exhibition at Art and Culture Center of Hollywood
Through a FAB/Knight New Work Grant, the Exhibition will run through January 18, 2015
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Recently, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (ACCH) opened a musically-inspired exhibition. Rock ’n’ Old, a project funded by Funding Arts Broward through a FAB/Knight New Work award, featured Los Angeles-based artist, DJ and record collector Dave Muller who created a mixed-media, site-specific installation that merges wall murals, large-scale paintings, three-dimensional works, and recorded music in the Main Gallery at the Center. The project included Muller’s interactive, trademark three-day opening weekend in November, which engaged the community in a free exchange of art, music, and ideas. The exhibition will run until Sunday, January 18, 2015 -a Free Admission Day at the museum. On the walls of the main gallery, Muller painted a mural of a timeline based on the rise of the rock ‘n’ roll genre and complemented this mural with paintings up to seven-feet tall that replicate the spines of record album covers. In his 13-day residency at ACCH, Muller spent more than 100 hours working in the gallery to create the most ambitious site-specific work in the Center’s history – a massive wrap-around wall mural that provided the backdrop for life-sized paintings. For this exhibition, Muller created a new painting of top-10 album choices by legendary punk-rock performer Iggy Pop, who personally supplied the artist with his picks. The opening enlisted the public’s participation as they shared their own relationships with popular music. “More than 400 people attended the opening weekend,” says Joy Satterlee, Executive Director, ACCH. “Dave Muller has collected more than 349,000 songs which are playing continuously on six listening stations in the gallery throughout the exhibition,” added Satterlee. “This project has been ground-breaking for the Art and Culture Center, and for the community to have this opportunity to be exposed to such an eclectic, musical entrepreneur and creative spirit.” This season the South Florida arts and cultural scene has been enhancedby three innovative, high quality art projects, supported by Funding Arts Broward’s FAB/Knight New Work Award. The three awardees are The Coral Springs Museum of Art ($50,000) for a CSMART Digital Art Lab and Symposium, a program of workshops and digital art salons that will culminate in March 2015; The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood ($20,000) for the exhibition Dave Muller: Rock ‘n Old; and NSU’s Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale ($20,000) for the exhibition, Research and Development: Concerning Belonging which connected South Florida artists with residents of homeless shelters in Broward County, held in Summer 2014. With the help of a three-year $150,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and matching funds, Funding Arts Broward is proud to have been able to put greater resources in the hands of eight artistic organizations to raise the bar for creative production in South Florida. “We fund ideas …from people with the vision, tenacity, courage, know-how to see them through,” says Dennis Scholl, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation. “Funding Arts Broward exemplifies our goals and we are pleased to see this project come to fruition.” In its third and final year, The FAB/Knight New Work Awards are a timely development in FAB’S evolving growth and success. Funding Arts Broward Invites New Members to Join in a Passion for the Arts
Florida Youth Orchestra demonstrates the benefits of music with impact to the community
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Recently, Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO) serenaded more than 80 FAB! members and their guests at Fort Lauderdale’s Tower Club. With the city and the ocean in the backdrop from 28 floors up, this group with high energy and purpose, mixed and mingled to the classical sounds of four students demonstrating that music is good for confidence, comradery and the human spirit. FYO’s Musical Director Steven Burnes shared ways and means that music affects lives, and particularly children. Five new members were welcomed into this Who’s Who Monday luncheon that celebrated the arts and the accomplishments of FAB! One hundred percent of membership dues are contributed through grants to arts organizations that present at venues throughout the county and enhance our community. In eleven years, Funding Arts Broward (FAB!) has distributed more than $2 million to the arts. “The one thing we in this room all agree upon, I think I can say with conviction,” says FAB! President Drazia Rubenstein, “is that the arts are important to us as individuals, as a community and indeed to society as a whole.” The four young musicians, Chase Cueto, Erin Gotlieb, Ethan Foreman and Abby Hart, performed a soft, classical rendition after the meal that confirmed any doubt, that the audience or Rubenstein may have had about her statement.
New members enjoyed their first FAB! luncheon of the season and shared how they too would like to be more involved. “We hope to continue to integrate and mix our membership demographics with more, younger members, male members and culturally diverse members,” says Rubenstein, “in order to truly represent Broward County, and the artistic talent and audience that we are working towards nurturing in the NEXT ten years.” Annually, Funding Arts Broward holds special FAB! Fun events in order to share with their members the special cultural experiences. It might be a back stage tour at Broward Center for the Performing Arts or a tour of a private art collector. FAB! fun events provide unique opportunities for members and their guests to experience the arts in our community, and have a first-hand look at their membership donations at work. Through an efficient and effective process for determining grant eligibility and funding, FAB! has created a community of like-minded, art loving individuals who have joined together as advocates of visual and performing arts. Funding Arts Broward Kicks Off The Season in Style
Choral Music Celebration welcomed members, their guests and the 2015 Season!
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Last week, Funding Arts Broward’s Corporate Member Northern Trust held a special, intimate rooftop party for FAB! members and their guests. This classily appointed affair took place just off Las Olas Blvd. overlooking a small waterway, and was gifted with a blue, clear sky. A Music Celebration! kicked off FAB!s 2015 season of events with much of Broward’s art community in attendance, and The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus performed later in the evening in celebration of the year ahead. During the evening, members and their guests easily relaxed and enjoyed the sparkling first-class event of camaraderie in the arts that is the signature of Funding Arts Broward.
Annually, Funding Arts Broward holds special FAB! Fun events in order to share with their members the work that they do with many organizations and the performances with which they are involved. It might be a back stage tour at Broward Center for the Performing Arts while in production of Motown; or a luncheon at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. FAB! Fun events provide unique opportunities for members and their guests to get up close and personal with the projects that their membership is funding. “All FAB! activities are coordinated by members,” says FAB!’S President Drazia Rubenstein. “With each making an annual donation.,we share a common belief that art and culture in contemporary society transcends our individual differences and unite us in celebration of the human spirit.”
Through an efficient and effective process for determining grant eligibility and funding redistribution, Funding Arts Broward has created a community of like-minded, art loving individuals who have joined together as advocates of local arts organizations and arts in general. As a not-profit organization dedicated to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, since 2003, FAB! has awarded more than two million dollars to more than thirty arts organizations in Broward County, and has grown to 131 members, including 8 corporate members, one who is the gracious host of this event. Also, FAB! is the recipient of a Knight Foundation Challenge Grant which allowed them to fund eight additional FAB! Knight New Work Projects in Broward County. The program is created through a sustainable funding pool supported by annual contributions by members – individuals ($1000) and corporate ($3,500), is managed through an accurate and transparent accounting system. Every cent of the membership fee is distributed to the arts through grants. Two Members of Funding Arts Broward Celebrated with Awards from Association of Fundraising Professionals
Founding Chair Francie Bishop Good and President and CEO, Women in Distress Mary Riedel will receive awards on November 12 at Signature Grand in Fort Lauderdale
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – More than ten years ago Francie Bishop Good invited a small group of women to join her in creating Funding Arts Broward (FAB!). On Wednesday, November 12, National Philanthropy Day, she, along with one of FAB!’s first members, will receive awards at an esteemed event. Bishop Good will be receiving the award for Outstanding Philanthropist; and President and CEO of Women in Distress Broward County, Inc., Mary Riedel will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The luncheon will be at 11AM, at Signature Grand in Davie. That day, a new concept of creating a grant pool for qualified non-profit arts organizations, to be funded by individual membership dues, was presented to a larger group of invitees, among which was Mary Riedel, who became a dedicated and steadfast founding member. “Francie is a passionate, committed and valued member of our community who works tirelessly, financially contributes generously and sets the standard for others to follow,” says FAB!’s President Drazia Rubenstein. “Mary Riedel has shown her dedication to Broward County through advocating and fighting for those who can’t help themselves; and marketing and public relations to educate and strengthen the core of the community.” National Philanthropy Day is an opportunity for the AFP to recognize those members of the community who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to leadership in philanthropy and volunteerism. “This particular luncheon is one of the largest of the hundreds celebrated nationally and throughout the world,” says Diana Metcalf, President, AFP-Broward County/Fort Lauderdale Chapter. “It is designed to honor those who support our charities through their commitment of their time, talent and treasure and to make our community a better place for all.” Awards are given annually in the categories -Outstanding Philanthropist, Volunteer Fundraiser, Fundraising Executive, Philanthropic Foundation, Philanthropic Corporation or Youth in Philanthropy. Francie Bishop Good was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and raised in nearby Allentown. She currently lives and works in South Florida and New York City. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. It is included in many public and private collections and has been featured in publications including “Art in America,” “Art News,” and the “Miami Herald.” Bishop Good is twice recipient of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship, and the State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. Her list of solo museum shows include the Allentown Art Museum, NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, Florida. Her work was the featured exhibit in 2013 at the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood Florida. Bishop Good is represented in Miami, by David Castillo Gallery where she has recently completed her second solo exhibit. Recent museum acquisitions include the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Wadsworth Atheneum, The Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, and the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale.
Mary Riedel is a leader in South Florida, often seen as the go-to person for community insight and leadership. Active in the community for nearly 30 years, Riedel became the President and CEO of Women in Distress of Broward County (WID) in 2008. WID serves families and children who are survivors of domestic violence from its expanded Jim and Jan Moran Family Center Campus in Deerfield Beach. Together with the Board, Mary led the agency’s largest expansion ($5 million capital campaign) that was completed in 2011, making Women In Distress among the oldest and now the largest of the 42 domestic violence centers in Florida. Prior to moving to the nonprofit sector in 2006, Mary had a 36-year career in media marketing and public relations. She was part of the Sun Sentinel’s marketing division for more than 18 years, serving as Community Affairs Manager and Publisher of its weekly Society sections. She also was Director of Major Gifts at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) from 2006 to 2008. Mary has served in leadership roles for a number of community boards and has been recognized by many groups for her work in advancing the nonprofit sector, advocating diversity, equality and inclusion. Funding Arts Broward Announces Awards for FAB/Knight New Work Projects
Projects from Coral Springs Museum of Art; Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale are supported through these dynamic awards
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The South Florida arts and cultural scene is enhanced with talent through three innovative, high quality art projects this Season, provided by Funding Arts Broward’s FAB/Knight New Work Award. The three winners are The Coral Springs Museum of Art ($50,000) for a CSMART Digital Art Lab and Symposium; The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood ($20,000) for the exhibition Dave Muller: Too Old to Rock ‘n Roll with Three Day Weekend; and NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale ($20,000) for the exhibition, Research and Development: Concerning Belonging. With the help of a three-year $150,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and matching funds, Funding Arts Broward is proud to be able to put greater resources in the hands of eight artistic organizations to raise the bar for creative production in South Florida. “We fund ideas …from people with the vision, tenacity, courage, know-how to seem them through,” says Dennis Scholl, Vice President, Arts for Knight Foundation. “Funding Arts Broward exemplifies our goals and we are pleased to see this project come to fruition.” Each project this year is detailed and diverse, with much attention given to planning and artistry as well as execution, reflecting the creation of presenting artworks of the highest merit. In NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s Research and Development: Concerning Belonging, South Florida artists undertake collaborative projects with homeless residents of Broward County, a critical issue of community concern. With the project management of artist/designer Luke Jenkins, who thought it important for museum visitors to understand the different ways that art can heal social problems, the homeless residents of Broward have been invited to share their stories through art, workshops and exhibitions. “NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, together with Luke Jenkins and the artists, have the same mission with this project,” says Bonnie Clearwater, Director of the Museum. “We aim to use the visual arts to approach one the most basic needs of human existence – shelter and a sense of belonging.” The exhibition opened on Friday and runs through September 14. Coral Springs Museum of Art’s Digital Art Lab, which offers workshops led by nationally-recognized digital artists, is available to youth, families and practicing artists, throughout the fall season into March 2015. The genre of digital arts inspired thoughts on the relatively unchartered territory of this medium – producing, exhibiting, collecting, and the workshops are designed to fill in the gaps in understanding about the creative potential of digital media today. In November, The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood brings the work of Los Angeles-based artist Dave Muller to Hollywood, in an exhibition that will enlist the public’s participation as they share their own relationships with popular music. In its third year, The FAB/Knight New Work Awards are a timely development in FAB!’s evolving growth and success. This unique award programwas open to eligible FAB-funded groups and devised to enable Broward County’s arts leaders to produce more ambitious projects and engage new audiences through creative marketing and free events. Intended as a catalyst to cultural presenters, it allows them the freedom to innovate and invest in the professional development of their creative personnel, to purchase necessary equipment, to collaborate with guest artists, and produce excellence. In May, jurors met to award the three exceptional non-profit arts and cultural organizations deserving of this year’s honor, for bringing multi-talent and production expertise to Broward County. This year’s jurors were Miami Art Museum Associate Curator Rene Morales and dancer, choreographer, and Coordinator of Performing Americans Program, National Performance Network, Elizabeth Doud. As she learned more about the area’s art and cultural community, the photographer realized that if these programs were to continue and thrive, it would take the resources and support of many organizations. “That’s how Funding Arts Broward (FAB!) was developed 10 years ago,” said founder Good. “To help preserve and nurture the arts in Broward County a plan was created to raise money from private individuals and create an ongoing funding pool.” To date through competitive grant processes, non-profit FAB! has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to more than 32 arts organizations in the last decade, according to Good. “Grants are funded by individual membership fees of $1,000 paid annually and 100% of this goes toward the grant funding pool,” said Board President Drazia Rubenstein. “In addition, we have our corporate members’ contributions of $3,500 each and additional gifts from our funding partners.” And, as state and county support withers for the arts, the need for FAB! has become increasingly more important, according to Rubenstein. Broward County developer and community leader Terry Stiles is one of the FAB! Knight Funding Partners. He has watched the impact that the grants have had upon the community. “The goal of FAB! is to promote the involvement in the arts for all residents of Broward County in a way that embraces and advances our diversity,” Stiles said. “And through a competitive process,awards are made to a myriad of non-profit visual and performing arts organizations.” FAB! helps to support exciting programs and cutting edge work in the visual and performing arts. For example, on April 26-27, the internationally known Trey McIntyre Project will perform Pass, Away, a new ballet which was written and choreographed by McIntyre. The project was commissioned by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It was underwritten by a $50,000 FAB! Knight New Work Award with additional support from the David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation. It will be the world premier in honor of FAB!’s 10th anniversary.
