President's Message

On the Importance of Planning...

Carolyn Lee, President

"Someone's sitting in the shade, today, because someone planted a tree a long time ago."

- Warren Buffett

Planning is one of the most important provisions that an organization can invest in. Summer is here and while many take time off to unwind, reflect and refresh, FAB! volunteers are busy creating, organizing and preparing for the fall season!

Because of the diligent planning efforts of our dedicated board members and their time spent behind-the-scenes at our FAB! Fun events, recruiting new members and reviewing grant applications, we've had our most successful year to date! I'm incredibly grateful to have helmed FAB! during this momentous time. Thank you for all that you do to help sustain and enrich the arts in Broward County!

And, speaking of grants, we had a spectacular year! At a time when arts funding in Florida is at a critical low, our membership and corporate partners stepped-up to provide and award $242,000 to 27 qualified arts organizations for the 2020 cycle; that's a 34% increase over last year! You can read more about the celebration, below.

The arts and philanthropy have always been a passion of mine, so I'm delighted to announce that I've been elected to lead FAB! into 2020! Joining me will be Ed Hashek as vice president, Cindy Eden as treasurer and Christy Lambertus as secretary.

Here's to an even more incredible 2019-2020 FAB! year and, as always, we look forward to your continuing support.

Granting Opportunities in the Arts

FAB! hosted its annual Grants Awards Presentation at BBX Capital on May 2. The cocktail reception was enjoyed by nearly 100 local arts organization representatives and FAB! members. Attendees were treated to tasteful and colorful assortment of culinary delights from Argentelle Catering plus a variety of decadent cocoa creations from Hoffman's Chocolates.

Grants ranging from $4,000 - $14,000 were awarded to 27 recipient organizations for distinct programming, totaling $242,000. With this grant cycle, FAB!'s total monetary distribution to date exceeds $3.3 million.

This year's FAB!'s 2020 grantees were All Florida Youth Orchestra, Inc., Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, Inc., Brazilian Voices Inc., Broward Performing Arts Foundation, Chopin Foundation of the United States, Inc., City Theatre, Inc., Fantasy Theatre Factory, Florida Grand Opera, Florida Singing Sons Boychoir, Florida Children's Theatre, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Island City Stage, Master Chorale of South Florida, Miami City Ballet, Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, New City Players Inc., Nova Southeastern University, Old Dillard Foundation, Patrons of Exceptional Artists, Seraphic Fire, Slow Burn Theatre Company, South Florida Chamber Ensemble, South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Stonewall Library & Archives, Symphony of the Americas and Young at Art of Broward.

A huge “thank you” goes to all of the members who volunteered on our grant screening teams, and in particular co-chairs Harvey Shapiro and Cindy Eden; team captains Ruth Anderson Coggeshall, Cindy Kashdin, Jeanne Lalli, Christy Lambertus and Tin Ly; team advisors Cindy Levin and Susan Lochrie; financial advisor Marcie Bour; and Drazia Simon for their hard work and dedication to FAB's mission to support, sustain and enrich the arts in our community.

Beaujolais & Arts Ballet at Bonnet House

With drinks flowing and spirits soaring, FAB! members enjoyed an elegant evening at Bonnet House in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Guests toured the private art collection of this historic and picturesque estate while enjoying hors d'oeuvres, fine wine, champagne and cocktails under the stars. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida performed a beautiful repertoire including excerpts of their recent and extraordinary production of the ballet “Le Papillon” with music by Offenbach as well as excerpts of “A Celebration to Klimt” with music by Handel - both choreographic works of Vladimir Issaev and the classical Pas de Deux “Talisman” with music by Drigo and choreography by Petipa. This extraordinary experience is just one of the exclusive benefits of being a FAB! member.

FAB! welcomes Roscioli Yachting Center as its newest corporate member

Since 1962, Bob Roscioli has been a trusted name in the Marine Industry. Today, his company is renowned for its vast experience, technical knowledge and unparalleled standard of excellence in the field of custom yacht building and yacht maintenance. Sharon Roscioli is a longtime arts enthusiast and devotee of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Entourage program and the Broward Public Library Foundation. Together, they are a tour de force in the arts and corporate communities.

"When we were invited to a FAB! event and learned how the organization is helping to bring the arts to life in the community, we fell in love with the program," shared Sharon Roscioli. "Art is the embodiment of creation. FAB! is nurturing our immensely talented storytellers and providing the means to bring their rich, complex performances to a wider audience. We're proud to be a part of this important mission to continue fostering the growth of culture and education in Broward County."

At FAB!, we're on a mission to keep the arts relevant and vital in our community. Each year, through your generosity, we've made incremental gains in reaching more arts supporters through our Visionary Fund. Your contributions allow us to access professional services, streamline our infrastructure and conduct outreach to more members - all necessary to continue FAB!'s role as a power in supporting the arts. More members = more dues that remain 100% allocated to grants for local arts groups!

When you make a donation to the FAB! Visionary Fund, now, through December 2019, your new or increased contribution will be matched up to $25,000 by The David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation.

Together, we can change the future of arts funding. Please consider making a gift to the Visionary Fund at fundingartsbroward.org or send a check to FAB! 8930 State Road 84, No. 316, Davie, FL 33324.

Thank you to our Corporate Members for their continued support!
