Art and Culture Center/Hollywood – $10,000

This collaborative group exhibition, titled “C(h)oral Stories and Collective Actions”, utilizes various visual media to illustrate the destructive impact of climate change and man-made pollution on coral reefs.  Exhibits include an 8-minute soundscape of marine sounds recorded in South Florida, a site-specific floor piece that forms a white, dead and exposed barrier reef, and a photo-based installation.  The exhibition dates are March 12 to May 15, 2022, and includes 4 Free Arts! Family Days.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida – $8,000

“Unbroken” is a new and original ballet performance choreographed by Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev which will bring to the stage the music of Eduardo Lalo’s Namouna.  This original work will feature 12 professional ballet dancers. The FAB grant will fund costumes for the dancers. Performances will be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on April 16 and 17, 2022.

ArtServe – $12,500

“Wetlands- Artistic Interventions in Response to the Everglades Environmental Crisis,” is a multimedia exhibition that promotes environmental awareness and sustainable practices.  The exhibition will present ecologically thematic works and performances that explore threats to the Florida Everglades, Lake Okeechobee and our surrounding seas, while highlighting and bringing awareness to the human impact on South Florida’s fragile ecosystem, and offering climate solutions and ecological sustainability initiatives Panel discussions with participating artists, leading experts in the field and community members will be conducted throughout the exhibition period along with special educational opportunities for the entire family. The exhibition will run from March 10 through April 22, 2022.

Brazilian Voices – $3,000

Brazilian Jazz Ensemble at Tour de Broward is a free, 1-hour public outdoor performance for 5000+ diverse community members at the Tour de Broward race event, a major fundraising event for children’s cancer treatment programs at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. There will also be an interactive sing-along “Audience Engagement”. The event takes place in February 2022.

Broward Center for the Performing Arts – $8,000

The performance of “Les Violons du Roy” with Jeremy Denk will be a part of the Broward Center’s 2022 Classical Series.  Taking place at Parker Playhouse, the concert will pair one of America’s foremost pianists with the internationally noted chamber orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, in its first South Florida appearance.  Jeremy Denk, a concert soloist and a chamber musician, is a winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize.  The concert will be held on March 8, 2022.

Chopin Foundation of The United States – $5,000

Chopin For All Free Concerts have been presented annually since 1999 at the Main Library’s 300 seat auditorium. The concerts feature young American pianists who are on the verge of becoming well-known concert artists.  Seven concerts per year are presented monthly from January through May, and November and December 2022.

Embrace Music Foundation – $7,000

“Rhythms of Africa/Music Around the World” is a musical journey that describes the movement of ancient rhythms sprung from the souls of vibrant cultures and carried by hand and heart from Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas.  The show caps a series of 14 two-hour workshops for students. The performance uses a full complement of lights, stage setting, sound, and professional musicians who join them on stage.  There will be one or two 90-minute performances on a Saturday in February 2022, celebrating Black History Month and Reggae Month.

Fantasy Theatre Factory – $11,000

Event 1:  Fantasy Theatre’s “Healing Arts Program for Youth” (HAPPY), which they have been doing since 2011, will serve hospitalized children, families and staff at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital. FTF’s innovative multiple mini-programs, featuring door to door, floor to floor character interactions with patients, parents and visitors, will lighten the serious side of hospitalization. Event 2: “Family Enrichment Series Featuring Little Monster Tales” is a ghoulishly great treat for audiences of all ages! Based on frightfully delightful children’s stories and poems, featuring puppets, comedy, music, monsters, and more!  Little Monster Tales will be presented to family audiences in Broward County.  There will be a total of 25 performances, reaching more than 3,500 children and families, between January and December 2022.

Florida Children’s Theatre – $9,000

As part of its 2022 Spring Performance Series, FLCT will produce one Teen Repertory production (performers grades 7-12) and one Family Series production (performers grades 2-12). The titles will be announced in Summer 2021. There will be a minimum of 8 performances between March 4, 2022 and May 29, 2022, as well as morning shows for school field trips, at FLCT’s theatre on the Broward College Central Campus in Davie.

Florida Grand Opera – $8,400

“Rigoletto and SongFest” is a two-part program.  Verdi’s “Rigoletto”, the timeless story of betrayal, dashed dreams and mistaken identity, is a beloved staple in the operatic repertoire all over the world.  “Rigoletto” will be performed on March 24 and 26, 2022 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  “SongFest Broward” is a series of 3 recitals presented by the FGO Studio Artists exploring music written by the contemporaries, teachers, and pupils of the main stage season composers.  The concerts will be held at the Center for Spiritual Living on January 14, February 11, and March 4, 2022.

Florida Youth Orchestra – $5,000

Family Spotlight Concert 2022 “Music for Social Change” is an eye-opening performance exposing the “hidden” influence of symphonic pieces that have made an impact on societies worldwide performed by young musicians, ages 9-18. The concert will include lectures by FYO conductors, explaining the intended purpose of each musical selection and its eventual impact on societies, and include our Artist In Residence, Grammy Award-winning flutist Nestor Torres. There will be 1 performance at Coral Springs Center for the Arts on March 6, 2022.

Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir – $7,000

The “Singing Sons Present: Spring 2022 Pops Concert” will introduce the culturally underserved children and adults in the Miramar/South Broward area to a varied musical program of selections drawn from the ancient Boychoir tradition, popular movie themes, and pop music. This performance will be held on Saturday, May 14th, 2022 at Parker Playhouse.  300 tickets will be provided free of cost.

Fort Lauderdale Children’s Ballet Theatre – $5,000

The Fort Lauderdale Children’s Ballet Theatre has been producing children’s ballets in Broward County for 33 consecutive years. The 2022 program, “Sleeping Beauty”, will showcase the professional and artistic achievements of over 100 young ballet dancers, ages 5-18, in the community at the Amaturo Theater. The 90-minute classical ballet, with original music by Tchaikovsky, is a transformational experience for children and families to have in an accessible, delightful way. There will be 4 performances on November 19 and 20, 2022.

Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival – $9,000

As part of “The 37th Annual Fort Lauderdale Film Festival” The Film Society will hold 3 film competitions: The International College Film Competition, The International High School Video Competition and the Filmed in Broward (FiB) program. The screenings of the winners of the competitions will take place during FLIFF37. The filmmakers will intro their films and lead Q&A after the films. A free reception follows each with the filmmaker groups meeting the audience for conversation. There will be 12 screenings, free to the public, taking place between November 4 and 20, 2022 at Savor Cinema and Cinema Paradiso.

Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida – $6,800

Tony Award-nominated composer Andrew Lippa has developed an artistically complex and socially riveting composition titled “Unbreakable.”  The piece is a musical journey that takes audiences through a chronology of the LGBTQ+ experience in America, from 1900 through the present.  The Chorus will perform this work on March 25, 2022 at Parker Playhouse, and on March 28, 2022 online virtually.

Gold Coast Jazz Society – $8,500

The “2022 Jazz Project” will include 4 concerts of internationally recognized jazz pianists and 1 free community jazz performance, presented by artists who are recognized and respected world-wide in the genre of jazz.  Artists will include the Grammy nominated jazz pianist/arranger/producer and Dean of the UM Frost School of Music, Shelly Berg with his Trio in a Gershwin celebration; the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Kenny Barron and his Trio; the Chuchito Valdes Afro-Cuban Ensemble; and jazz pianist and vocalist Tony Desare. These will take place at the Amaturo Theater January through March 2022, with a free concert at Pompano Beach Cultural Center in February.

Inside Out Theatre Company – $4,500

Inside Out Theatre will stage the musical “Cabaret” in a program entitled “Cabaret & Context”.  Most of the theatre’s productions are performed by students; however, given the adult nature of the play, older actors will perform.  In order to extend the production’s impact, speakers and workshops addressing social justice and anti-Semitism will accompany the performances.  Five performances will be held on January 6 through 8, 2022 at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre.

Island City Stage – $8,800

Island City Stage’s proposed program is the theatrical production of” Suddenly Last Summer” by Tennessee Williams. Scandal and greed lurk around every corner in this play that Williams considered his most poetic and that has been ranked among the best examples of William’s lyricism. According to the playwright, we all use each other and that’s what we think of as love. As such, hypocrisy, greed, sexual repression, a secret journal, moral corruption, and cannibalism are all packed into this pot boiler. This play is rich in symbolic detail that’s open to many interpretations.  There will be 20 performances between March 17 and April 17, 2022.

Master Chorale of South Florida – $7,800

Scored for full symphony, massive choral forces, and operatic soloists, “Verdi’s Requiem Mass” has established itself as one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. One performance will be held in March or April of 2022 at either Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church or the Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University, with a projected attendance of 750 people.

Miami City Ballet – $9,500

Miami City Ballet presents the North American Premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s “Swan Lake”.  Choreographer Ratmansky stages a new production of the seminal work, emphasizing the human love story between the main characters.  Ratmansky has ultimately created an historically-significant restoration of the ballet in a striking departure from the ethereal productions that have evolved out of the last century.  Two performances will take place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on February 26 and 27, 2022.

New City Players – $7,000

“Ruined”, the Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Lynn Nottage set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stretches its characters to the brink of destruction while still infusing moments of grace, life, and hope.  There will be 12-15 performances over 3 weekends in the Spring of 2022 in a 65 – 90 seat theatre in Fort Lauderdale. Exact dates and venue location will be confirmed at a later date.

NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale – $15,000

This exhibition explores the phenomenon of Yale University’s MFA program from 2000 to 2010 when they attracted and admitted a significant generation of artists of color who have since achieved world-wide recognition. These artists marked a major turning point at this predominantly white, privileged Ivy League school and their subsequent prominence in the art world contributed to a major rupture in the trajectory of Western art history, which until recently excluded artists of color. This exhibition features graduates of the Yale MFA program. It explores the commonality and distinctions in these artists’ work and how these artists’ rise to prominence helped redirect contemporary art history by expanding into new genres of art, encompassing a more inclusive and diverse art world. This study will serve as a case study for other MFA programs and will be an important contribution to art history and will run February to September, 2022.

Old Dillard Foundation – $9,000

The Old Dillard Foundation’s Oral History Project “Remembering the Past for Therein Lies the Future” will collect oral histories of 10 local African American residents and will create a video documentary of their stories and historic places.  The Foundation will then create a book/curriculum of the oral histories and photos of the area, which will be available free to promote the messages of positive black history and culture, citizenship and resilience. The documentary premiere and discussion will be held on June 10, 2022, hosted by a panel of local scholars, to foster constructive dialogue with the public. Dissemination to schools will be from October through December, 2022.

OUTshine Film Festival – $7,500

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival – 14th Annual Fort Lauderdale Edition will offer 37 screenings encompassing 55 features, documentaries and shorts, culled from an estimated 300 submissions to be received.  The festival will run from October 6 through 16, 2022 at several locations.  There will be complementary programming, including panel discussions and community events.  The films will come from around the world and will be drawn from major domestic, international, and independent producers and distributors.

Patrons of Exceptional Artists – $3,000

The 2022 Miami International Piano Festival Academy will be presented in partnership with Nova Southeastern University for the 7th year, and will include Master Series concerts and piano Lecture Series. Community residents are offered lectures by distinguished musicologists, masterclasses by accomplished international faculty artists, and recitals by our world-renowned faculty and top participants in the Academy Program.  Lectures are open and free of charge to the public. The Masters Series of recitals features performances by members of the distinguished Academy faculty, which are marketed to the general public. Students and Academy participants attend the Series free of charge. The Master Series consists of 11 concerts presented June 30^th through July 17^th, 2022.

Seraphic Fire – $11,000

GRAMMY® nominated professional vocal ensemble, Seraphic Fire, will bring top ensemble singers and instrumentalists from around the country to present 5 concerts of choral and choral/orchestral works in Broward County from January to April 2022. In January, the women of Seraphic Fire, conducted by Patrick Quigley, will present an encore live performance celebrating Seraphic Fire’s CD release of a work by the first documented female composer, Hildegard von Bingen.  February will bring Seraphic Fire’s annual Festival.  In March, this rousing concert showcases the men of Seraphic Fire.  In April, for the first time since 2004, Seraphic Fire will perform the entirety of Handel’s Messiah to close the season.

Slow Burn Theatre Company – $11,800

“Head Over Heels: The Musical” is a jukebox musical comedy with music and lyrics from the catalog of The Go-Gos.  It adapts the plot of “The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia,” the 16th century prose romance by Sir Philip Sidney. There will be 15 performances held from June 10 through June 26, 2022 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater.

South Florida Chamber Ensemble – $3,000

“Encounters with Strangers” is a series of 6 concert programs, each one exploring the power of the stranger to change a life. Each concert includes music by a diverse set of composers, including women, people of color, Americans, and living composers. Concerts conclude with a round table discussion of the issues raised.  Some of the topics addressed are the Holocaust, the civil war in Argentina, unlikely friendships and melting polar ice caps.  There will be 12 performances throughout the year at Miramar Cultural Center and Deerfield Beach Historical Society Museum and Cultural Center.

South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble – $6,500

The SFPWE, joined by Island City Stage, will present a concert production of Marvin Hamlisch’s masterpiece, “A Chorus Line”.  The full Pride Wind Ensemble will be joined on the stage by singularly sensational actors from Island City Stage to perform a thrilling combination of a specially curated selection of songs, dialogue, and choreography. There will be 1 performance on May 14, 2022, at the Amaturo Theater.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra – $9,500

The February 2022 “Masterworks Concert: Gottsch, Tchaikovsky” will include the World Premier of Princess Yurievskaya by John Gottsch, Composer-in-Residence for the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, an orchestral symphonic poem. Tchaichovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as the Pathetique Symphony, is Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s final completed symphony, written in 1893.  There will be one performance in February, 2022 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater.

The Girlchoir of South Florida – $9,500

The musical centerpiece of “Belonging” will be a choral setting of the poem by the same name, composed by Joan Szymko, as they explore the theme of home. Additional musical selections span a vast array of genres and styles. All of us feel like we don’t fit in from time to time, especially as young people, so it’s all the more important to highlight our connection to each other and to our community.  There will be 2 performances in different venues, Miniaci Performing Arts Center and All Saints Episcopal Church, targeting different audiences

Wilton Art – $3,800

“letitrain.2022 (Let it Rain)” will be a community-based visual art project to transform the mindset of the rainy season, June through August, 2022, into one filled with joy.  During South Florida’s 2022 rainy season, local volunteers, artists, school children, art teachers, families, and members of our organization will create stencil designs for use in the project which will be brought to life by painting the stencil designs onto city sidewalks, recreational parks, and other high foot traffic areas throughout the city. Special ‘invisible paint’ by Rainworks will be used so the artwork only comes to life in the presence of water; it is totally invisible until it rains. Only environmentally-friendly materials will be used. Rainworks has the experience and a track record of creating ‘rain art’ projects around the country.

The following are Education Grants, a pilot FAB program for 2022 targeting children K-12

Art and Culture Center/Hollywood – $4,500

The Summer Arts Outreach program will provide K-12 students with an interactive and highly accessible arts-education experience during the Center’s annual family-friendly, contemporary gallery exhibition (June 4-Aug. 14, 2022). Through gallery tours and thematic art-making, approximately 750 school age children will be introduced to the working practices of exhibiting contemporary artists and apply what they’ve learned by creating their own artwork in the Interactive Room adjacent to the exhibition. There will also be guided field-trip tours with interactive art-making for up to 20 visiting summer-camp programs.

Ashanti Cultural Arts – $3,000

Classes in Fine Arts will be held 2 to 4 times weekly, January through August, targeting students in the Northwest Pompano area where the poverty rate is 35.8%. The sessions will include art, literacy, dance and music merging academics with the arts using painting sculptures, collages, group projects, photography and other forms of art mediums. There will be a music component which will include African drumming and dance to build non-verbal skills, and increase creativity and confidence.

Broward Center for the Performing Arts – $5,000

The foundation’s program focuses on both skill acquisition and art appreciation.  Presentation of Ronald K. Brown’s “EVIDENCE: A Dance Company” in a multi-day residency from Jan. 3-6, 2022, including 1 school-day performance for public school students and 3 educational workshops that promote learning and engagement through dance. Study guides for teachers and students will be given in advance of the performance to promote a more interactive experience, cultivate an appreciation of modern dance, and connect the performance with current social and civic issues.

Fantasy Theatre Factory – $5,000

“Bringing Books to Children” promotes learning to read through art and theater.  The program combines a performance of the literacy incentive play, “Bananas, Books and Pancakes” at each of 22 Title I elementary schools in Broward County, reaching 4,500 children. Study guides will be provided for all teachers. There will be an after-show cast discussion and each child attending the performance will receive, as a gift, a free book based on one of the featured stories in the play.  All programs take place during early morning school hours, January through May.

Island City Stage – $2,500

The Island City D’Verse Theater Camp “Once Upon A Time” program teaches adolescents all aspects of theatrical performance – terminology, techniques, performance skills, improvisational work, playwriting and live production.  Students will rehearse during 10 three- hour workshops and present a fully-staged performance of a one-act play based on a combination of traditional fairy tales and original characters, June 13-25, 2022. The D’Verse Theater Alliance is administered in partnership with the City of Oakland Park and is a safe space for youth creative expression.

South Florida Chamber Ensemble – $3,000

The Junior Ensemble (JE) is a training program that empowers young musicians to improve their musical skills, gain confidence, and learn soft skills. This project will create 8 junior ensembles of 4-12 musicians who will rehearse once a week with their SFCE professional mentors, January through May, 2022 and perform one concert a month.  Weekly sessions will include learning and perfecting musical skills like sight reading, intonation, and leadership skills and more.  The program targets students with untapped musical potential at 8 middle and high schools in underserved communities.

South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble – $3,000

The “Youth Pride Band” is an annual honor band styled program that brings approximately 100 LGBTQ students and their allies together from all over South Florida. SFPWE has recognized that it must bring in the best composers and clinicians to the program to make the Youth Pride Band more than another LGBT Student Organization. The program consists of 10 rehearsals, and 1 concert performance at the Amaturo Theater in February 2022.  YPB in 2022 will feature Emmy Award winning composer, Julie Ann Giroux.
